Hotel Vancouver Occupation, Monday 28 January 1946
After returning from the war to find a severe housing crisis in Vancouver, veterans took matters into their own hands and squatted the old Hotel Vancouver, which had been sitting empty since its use as a barracks ended after the war. The vets were determined to keep public opinion on their side and so ran the hotel with strict discipline, including house rules ”that would warm the heart of the most cold-hearted house ‘dick.’
